Plants used for Medicine – Spirit Journey with Sweet Basil

Medical PlantSweet Basil (Ocimum basilicum), is always seen at our house during the growing season. When you happen to brush against it during your walks through the plant pots, it jumps up to say hello, letting you know it’s there with an absolutely pungent burst of aroma. We all know Basil from pesto making or additions to salads but this ‘fit for a king’ (Greek – basileus=king) herb has a lot of good medicine and history as plants used for medicine. The Basil we know as Sweet Basil is but one of many varieties. Originating in India, it was quickly cultivated throughout the world and is now used in many world cuisines.

The other day, I sat down with Sweet Basil and asked for any vibrational medicine properties not previously recorded by me. Basil is well known for its variety of medicinal benefits but I wanted to know more of its spirit, and the gift of energetic medicine it had to offer.

Energetic Benefits:

Plants used for medicine, such as Sweet Basil is known to stimulate and focus the mind and balance the emotions. It is excellent for dispelling negativity and despair in the mind. When I let the scent of basil enter my space, I immediately sensed a focus and clarity of mind. Something that was new for me is a heart opening and protecting energy. I also sensed a protection or grounding energy around my feet. The plants will always give you want you need and so apart from using essential oil of Basil in any remedies that require clarity, I will add this to my list of heart opening and protection remedies that are made at The Plant Medicine Shop. The energy feel was protection in the general ‘energy body’ sense as well of heart protection.

It is hard to talk about the spiritual benefits of Basil without noting the amazing nutritional benefits and the effect on the physical body.

Nutritional Benefits: Basil is chock full of Vitamin K, with good amounts of Vitamin A & C, iron and magnesium to name a few. It is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, carminative, stimulant, digestive, anti-fungal, refrigerant, nervine and a diaphoretic – which basically means that it lowers inflammation, kills certain bacteria and fungus, helps with digestive issues, calms nerves, lowers fevers and makes you sweat. Quick uses for your Sweet Basil:-

-Basil is an excellent digestive – drop a few fresh-picked leaves into boiling water.

-Insect bites are quickly relieved when a few fresh-picked leaves or essential oil is applied.

-Apply essential oil to back of neck and temple to aid mental confusion or depressive attitude

Fresh-picked leaves are excellent for summer fevers

How Does Social Medicine Affect Your Healthy Eating Plan?

Medicine AffectHealthy eating begins with learning how to eat, which can defend you again heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and depression, and can boost your energy, sharpen your memory and stabilize your mood. You can find people on health related social networking sites discussing a range of healthy food choices and you can learn how to plan ahead to create and maintain a satisfying, healthy diet. Such topics discussed include healthy eating tips.

Eating with others has many social and emotional benefits than eating in front of the TV or computer.
Take time to chew your food slowly and enjoy mealtimes.
Ask yourself if you are really hungry or actually really thirsty. Have a glass of water to see whether you are only thirsty instead of hungry. During a meal, stop eating before you feel full.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, be sure to eat breakfast, and eat smaller meals throughout the day.
Drink More Water

People found on health related social networking sites advise others to drink more water. Water helps flush our systems of waste products and toxins, yet many people go through life dehydrated, causing tiredness, low energy, and headaches. It’s common to mistake thirst for hunger, so staying well hydrated leads to a healthier lifestyle.

What About Exercise?

When it comes to preventing, controlling, or reversing diabetes, consider exercising. Regular exercise maintains your weight and can improve your insulin sensitivity. One of the easiest moderate-intensity activities is walking for 30 minutes five or more times a week, swimming or riding a bike. You can discuss with others on social networking sites your exercise achievements and compare results.

Eat In Moderation

The most common advice seen on social networking sites is not to deprive yourself of the foods you love, but eat them in moderation. Try not to think of certain foods as off-limits. When you ban certain foods or food groups, it is natural to want those foods more, and then feel like a failure if you give in to temptation. Think smaller portions. If you are drawn towards sweet, salty, or unhealthy foods, start by reducing portion sizes and not eating them as often. You may find that you are craving them less or thinking of them as only occasional indulgences.

Eat The Rainbow

Eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables. Colorful and deeply colored fruits and vegetables contain higher concentrations of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants and different colors provide different benefits.

Greens, such as broccoli, and Chinese cabbage are just a few of the options, all packed with calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc, and vitamins A, C, E, and K.
Sweet vegetables, such as corn, carrots, beets, sweet potatoes, yams, onions, and squash
Fruit such as berries, apples, oranges and mangos, are satisfying way to fill up on fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants.
Healthy Carb Options

Healthy carbs are digested slowly, helping you feel fuller for longer, while keeping your blood sugar and insulin levels stable. Healthy carbs include whole grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables.

Unhealthy carbs digest quickly and cause spikes in blood sugar levels and energy. These include white flour, refined sugar, and white rice that have been stripped of all bran, fiber, and nutrients. Blogs found on social networking sites document peoples experience on carb intake.

Eat Healthy Fats

Eating healthy fat nourish your brain, heart, hair, skin, and nails. Foods rich in certain omega-3 fats can reduce cardiovascular disease, improve your mood, and help prevent dementia. Unhealthy fats like saturated fats and trans fats should be reduced or eliminated from your diet. There are various healthy fats to consider and remain in your diet, and these include:

▪ Monounsaturated fats that are derived from plant oils like canola oil, peanut oil, and olive oil, as well as avocados, nuts like almonds, hazelnuts, and pecans, and seeds such as pumpkin, sesame.

▪ Polyunsaturated fats, including Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, found in fatty fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies and sardines oil supplements. Other sources of polyunsaturated fats are unheated sunflower oil, corn oil, soybean oil, flaxseed oil, and walnuts.

Guidelines To Protein

Protein aids to the building blocks of our body that provides growth and energy, while maintaining cells, tissues, and organs. A lack of protein can slow growth, reduce muscle mass, lower immunity, and weaken the heart and respiratory system. The different types of protein include beans such as black beans and lentils, nuts such as almonds and walnuts, and soy products such as tofu and soy milk.

Calcium Equals Healthy Bones

Calcium-rich foods are one of the key nutrients that your body needs in order to stay strong and healthy. The recommended calcium levels are 1000 mg per day, 1200 mg if you are over 50 years old. Good sources of calcium-rich foods include dairy products such as milk and cheese, vegetables such as leafy greens and celery, and beans such as black beans and kidney beans.

Functional vs. Traditional Medicine

Traditional MedicineFunctional medicine is a science-based and natural way to bring people back to a healthier state. Functional medicine is patient-centered medical healing. However, instead of looking at and treating health problems as isolated illnesses and diseases, functional medicine treats individuals who have a number of bodily symptoms, imbalances and dysfunctions.

Diseases such as diabetes, cancer and fibromyalgia may appear to just be diseases. However, according to functional medicine, the causes of these disease lie in an altered physiology that is the result of imbalances and dysfunctions within the body. Almost always, the cause of a disease and it’s symptom are related to an underlying dysfunction or imbalance in the body’s systems. If you were to visit with a doctor, conventional medicine is just going to treat the disease or illness. Rarely will treatment with conventional medicine lead to long-term relief and an improved and healthier lifestyle.

With functional medicine, the underlying cause is identified and treated. Because of this, the patient has a much better chance of improving their health. By using scientific principles, functional medicine treatment is able to use advanced diagnostic testing and treatments other than prescription medications and surgery to restore balance to the body. The overall goal of functional medicine? To help ensure a patient’s lifelong, optimal health.

How Functional Medicine is Filling the Gaps in Health Care

It probably comes as no surprise that today’s health care system has gaps. Today’s health care system is in trouble because it follows a medical management model. This medical management model works well when it comes to acute health problems. When it comes to chronic health problems, today’s conventional medicine is much less successful. If you have a heart attack, pneumonia or need life-saving surgery, the quick-thinking used by doctors in modern medicine is something that we are all very thankful for. Life-saving technology, surgery and antibiotics are necessary in certain instances. We should all be very grateful for these interventions should we ever find ourselves in a serious medical emergency or in need of antibiotics to cure an infection.

However, conventional medicine often quickly reaches for medications, surgery and other acute treatment options when another approach is needed. When it comes to those with chronic, debilitating ailments — including heart disease, diabetes or arthritis, a different approach is needed. This is where functional medicine comes into play.

The Functional Medicine Approach to Healing:

To help alleviate chronic medical conditions, the functional medicine approach is grounded in two scientific principles.Add what is lacking in the body to help bring it’s physiology back to an optimal state of functioning.Remove anything that impedes the body from moving forward to a goal of optimal physiology. In short, the goals of functional medicine is to find a natural approach to bringing the body back to a healthy state. In order for the body to be brought back to a healthy state, functional medicine identifies the reasons why the body is malfunctioning. Functional medicine addresses those issues in a way that is appropriate for each individual patient. In many cases, functional medicine practitioners will use advanced laboratory testing to help identify the root causes (or multiple cases) of a patient’s health problems.

Listening to a patient’s symptoms and asking questions of their food choices, activities and lifestyle can also be very helpful in helping a functional medicine practitioner to determine the cause(s) of a patient’s chronic pain. As far as treatment goes, functional medicine practitioners use a combination of natural agents, nutrition changes, lifestyle changes, spiritual counseling, emotional counseling and pharmaceuticals. Natural agents can include supplements, homeopathics, herbs and nutraceuticals. Education also plays an important role in returning a patient’s physiology back to an optimal state. Education helps to empower patients to take charge of their own health. When patients are in charge of their own health and well-being, there is likely going to be much greater success when it comes to treatment.

Functional Medicine and Treating Symptoms vs. Treating the Person

In today’s conventional medicine world, medication is used to get rid of patient’s symptoms. In many cases, the symptoms return when a patient stops using the medications. For example, think of medications used to treat arthritis. When a patient stops taking their medications, they are likely going to experience the pain of arthritis all over again. This is where functional medicine is different. Instead of just masking the problem with medication, function medicine aims at restoring the body’s natural function.

While functional medicine practitioners may prescribe pharmaceuticals, these medications are only prescribed to move the patient in the right direction. This is so the patient will not always be dependent on prescription medications. For instance, conventional medicine doctors would typically prescribe a medication like Prilosec for treatment of acid reflux or heartburn. As soon as the patient stops taking this medication, their symptoms will return. On the other hand, a functional medicine doctor may discover that the patient’s heartburn is actually caused by a bacteria. By treating the bacteria and removing it from the body, the heartburn could very well be put to a permanent end.

It is important to realize that with functional medicine, treatment may vary greatly from patient to patient. Another important thing to remember about functional medicine is that is it based in listening to the patient. By listening to the patient, functional medicine practitioners are able to make an accurate diagnosis.

Natural Medicine-Thinking Beyond The Prescription Bottle

When you get sick, you go to the doctor. And the doctor will, of course, prescribe medicines. You will go and buy medicines. You take them, and hopefully, you get well.

This is how the health profession goes on nowadays, a cycle of diagnosis and prescription.

If anyone were to give you herbs for medicine, you would probably say that that person was a quack.

But nowadays, studies are being conducted to see if there are really is any merit to what is called natural medicine.

Natural medicine is the use of natural methods, herbal medicines, and traditional practices to heal ailments. Every culture has a form of natural medicine. In ancient cultures, village medicine men served as the doctors of the community, passing on medical knowledge to the apprentices that followed them.

Many categories of the healing methods fall under natural medicine. Among these are traditional medicine, complementary medicine, and alternative medicine.

Usually, natural medicine refers to medical practices that were in place before the advent of modern medicine.

This includes herbal medicine, or phytotherapy, which is prevalent in Chinese, Ayurvedic(or Indian), and Greek medicine.

Upon the advent of modern medicine, many professionals discarded the use of herbs in favor of man-made medicine. The fact that these treatments are based on the healing properties of some herbs was forgotten.

For example, opium, digitalis, quinine, and aspirin all have their roots in traditional medicine.

Natural medicine can be considered as a lost art. This does not mean that it has lost efficacy over time. In some cases, natural therapy is actually better than modern medicine. This leads some doctors to seriously consider and study the possible uses of natural medicine

Before we continue, it is important to stress that not all the natural remedies are legitimate. It would help to only try those remedies which have been thoroughly studied and are relatively risk free.

Take herbal medicine for example. There are many well-documented and studied herbal remedies available. However, only those that deal with minor ailments such as cough, colds, fever, skin rashes, and the like are likely to be recommended by health professionals. These remedies are sometimes superior to synthetic medicine. This is because herbal medicines are less likely to cause negative side effects.

Currently there are numerous organizations that study the effects and advocacy of natural medicine among which is herbal medicine. Some governments and health agencies openly advocate the use of natural methods since they are inexpensive and relatively risk-free.

As their studies compile, more herbs and treatments are added to the list of accepted medicines. However, many herbs and treatments have been proven to be bogus medicine. This represents a challenge for both the user and the agencies because they have to ascertain that the treatments they either use or advocate are legitimate.

There exist today many alternative medical treatments that fall under natural medicine. However, not all of them have been proven to be effective. You could mention homeopathy, aromatherapy, acupuncture, and other alternative medical treatments. It would pay to consult the experts as to the legitimacy of these treatments.

Natural medicine should also be thought of as an accompanying medicine. Right now, the current collective medical thought suggests that natural medicine be used only to supplement accepted modern medical practices. In that case of minor ailments your expert we actually advise you to take natural therapies instead.

The practice of modern medicine revolves around diagnosing an illness and prescribing treatments for such. Natural medicine is helpful because it suggests that treatment be not necessarily given only when sick. Natural medicine strives to make each patient practice good health habits. These habits include good diet, healthy living, and the regular natural treatment.

It is this same line of thought that leads our parents to tell us to eat our vegetables. Yes, a healthy lifestyle and will do no harm to our well-being. And this is the foundation of natural medicine; may it be massage, herbal medicine, aromatherapy or others.

It is funny but true that science, in its quest for excellence, is studying the knowledge of sages past. This, surprisingly, leads us back to the remedies nature offers. The possibilities of finding remedies to everyday illnesses in natural medicine are encouraging. So staying tuned to studying these remedies is worthwhile until we can verify that these therapies are truly helpful to our health and our society.

Cutting Edge In Medicine- Alternative Medicine

Alternative medicine is a practice used to replace conventional alopathy. It involves spritual, religious, metaphysical, innovative approach to healing.

Alternative medicines are almost 500 in number. To name a few alternative medicines, are herbal medicine, acupressure, behavior health, homeopathy, Chinese herbal medicine, non-medical massage therapy, cranio-sacral therapy, hypnosis, guided imagery, chelation therapy, acupuncture, folk remedies, tribal-traditional medicine, Christian Science, megavitamins, self-help groups, reiki, flower therapy, pranic healing, reflexology, energy healing, Shiatsu Oriental Massage and ayurvedic.
It has lot of definitions. But according to the National Center for Alternative Medicine- it is defined as group of different class of health and medical practices which are not a part of present conventional medicine. It also an integrative medicine i.e. a Combinations of both alternative and conventional method of treatment. For e.g. in addition to the conventional prescription medicine, a nice Tai massage is proved to do wonders.

Conventional allopathic doctors are preferred in any case of health problem from childhood. Alternative medicine has gained popularity and gained trust by many people and the same is advocated to different field in treatment where conventional medicine are not used like boosting patient’s confidence, in pain management, stress reduction and few preventive health therapies.

Many patients use alternative medicine and traditional therapies to complement each other. Alternative medicine is both holistic and preventative one, which helps a patient’s physical and psychological well-being and tries to be preventive than a therapy used after the symptoms appear.

Itg has also gained popularity in last few years. As the name suggest these are becoming an alternative form of therapy when the conventional method is going ineffective. Mostly for un-curable disease and for chronic pains alternative medicines relieve pain immediately and relieve the mental stress and tensions. When compared to conventional methods the alternative medicines has less or no side effects. Regular conventional medicine believers find it difficult to switch to alternative medicine. The difference between the conventional and alternative medicine is conventional medicine cure physical ailments where as alternative medicine focus on mind and body.

In Alternative medicine, the philosophies followed are: Body with little therapy and medicine can heal by itself. Always a product should enhance the bodies healing capacity. Prevention is better than cure. A general check up is carried out periodically to keep a check before anything goes wrong. Bodies responding capacity to any treatment is important then the treatment itself.

How To Fight Asthma Without Medicine

Asthma is a physical condition that affects the air passage of the lungs. When you have asthma, the tubes that carry air down to your lungs get hyper-reactive and they become easily swollen and inflamed. Excessive mucus is secreted into the breathing tubes and the breathing tubes restrict the airflow and the asthma condition sets in. When this happens, the entire process of breathing inhaling and exhaling – becomes a struggle.

If you are diagnosed with asthma, the chances are that you may suffer from it for life. A recent study has revealed that 85% of females and 78% of males diagnosed with asthma between the ages of 8 and 12, continued to have medical symptoms for a long, long time. Asthma experts claim that asthma is a growing worldwide problem and are not able to explain why it has grown to epidemic proportions over the last thirty years. This increasing incidence could be due to several factors – stress, diet, dust mites, better living standards, increased pollution, better diagnosis etc. One of the most disturbing findings is that over consumption of some asthma drugs like bronchodilators may also be a factor.

The fact remains that many people are suffering from asthma without even knowing about it. Some of the common medical symptoms of asthma are wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and persistent coughing. Asthma usually occurs due to dust and dust particles, fumes/cigarette smoke, any pungent smell, some allergic foods, sudden changes in air temperature, obnoxious chemicals, common cold etc. When your asthma is well controlled, then you will not use a reliever drug more than three times a week, will not suffer from nocturnal coughs and wheezing, will not experience discomfort when performing normal daily activities, will be able to do physical without asthma symptoms.

First ascertain what allergies the person suffering from asthma has and then avoid these allergens to prevent asthma attacks. Eat foods that relieve asthma symptoms such as salmon, tuna and mackerel that are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids which help reduce the production of inflammatory compounds, improve pulmonary function, and prevent breathing constriction. Eat plentifully fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C and B that are known to reduce stress and inflammation. Prostaglandins found in onions relax bronchial muscles and open lung airways. Chick peas are also a source of vitamin B6 which reduces wheezing. Drink only chlorine-free distilled or ionized water as chlorine irritates receptors in the throat and lungs. Perform breathing exercises daily – breathe in through the nose and exhale through the mouth to strengthen the respiratory muscles. Lavender and eucalyptus are best used during an asthma attack because they relax and open ling airways.

Everyone with asthma should always carry a reliever inhaler. When you get asthma symptoms a reliever inhaler will help you to relax the muscles around your airways, making breathing easier. There are preventer inhalers that help to soothe and calm the inflammation in your airways. Although the preventer will make you feel better, it does not make your asthma vanish altogether. So you will need to take your preventer regularly to keep your lungs healthy and strong. A spacer is a plastic container with a mouthpiece at one end and a hole for the aerosol inhaler at the other. When you press your inhaler the fine spray of medicine is trapped inside the spacer ready for you to breathe it in.

How To Keep An Eye On Your Medical Practice Management.

The medical practitioner is the one that is responsible in keeping an eye on all the things that is involved on his or her medical practice in order for him or her to have an efficient and sound medical practice management. Even if there are really dedicated and efficient staff in a facility, there will always be some rough times on the front desk especially during busy hours in a medical practice, and because the personnel are only human, there will always be some chances of mistakes to happen due to some immense pressure on the line of work. That is why you need to know how you can fix this issue.

You need to look for a lot of options.

One of the things that you can do in order to handle the increasing number of work load and dealing with some important tasks like taking calls and setting up medical appointments is to employ more personnel for the medical practice facility. But there are so many important factors that you will need to consider like adding more people to the payroll, the insurance, and the time needed to look for the right personnel. And one thing that you need to keep in mind is that the turnover of the personnel on a medical practice is extremely high and there is a great chance that you might be required to do the same process in the near future.

Another option that you can choose is the service of a live virtual receptionist. But a problem with this option is that a live virtual receptionist might not be able to handle the appointment scheduling of a patient due to some restrictions on the HIPPA guidelines. Aside from that, they will also be facing the same mental and physical limitations as the personnel on the front desk and because the medical practice facility is dealing with the life of people, mistakes and errors are not accepted, and this might ruing the reputation of the medical practice facility as well as the relationship between patients and doctors.

Looking for the real solutions

It is important that you keep a feasible and realistic realm in regards to the work load of the staff in your front desk in order for you to have a proper medical practice management. Setting up medical appointments can consume most of the time of a medical receptionist, and that time should have been used to deal with the needs of the patient in the medical practice facility. If you want to know more about the different options and solutions to the issues that surrounds a great medical practice management, then you should consider looking for the service of Dwayne Pope Atlanta, this way you can get the answers to your problems in order to keep a high reputation for your medical practice facility.

FInding the Right Arizona Addiction Recovery Center

What are the warning signs of addiction? Why should an arizona addiction recovery center be considered? The diversity of behaviors that reflect on a child or adult is very significant. Schematically, there are early signs and late symptoms.

Early signs

Early signs start with emotional disorders (excitement, sadness, anxiety, excessive fear, isolation, self-esteem, etc.). Things may progress to sleep pathologies (difficulty falling asleep, insomnia, incessant awakenings throughout the night, nightmares, and so on. On the contrary, the user may experience hypersomnia, daytime sleepiness, and the like). Other signs are:

  • Disturbed eating behavior (anorexia, bulimia, spontaneous vomiting).
  • Psychosomatic disorders (headaches, tetanus attacks, severe fatigue, stomachaches, fear of the disease).
  • Difficulties in school (loss of results, absenteeism, excessive delays, phobia or failing grades).

The late signs

Disinformation (vandalism, fights, theft, etc.) become a problem as well as possible suicide attempts (acts or thoughts of death, suicidal speech). What can people do when dealing with this? Even if a teenager or adult shows these signs, it is up to loved ones and friends to establish and maintain an open dialogue with the user. This means that you should show the user that you are attentive to their needs, assuring him or her of your love and affection and understanding. Avoid judgment, continually telling him or her that they can count on you.

It is essential for the user to feel surrounded by loved ones even if he or she seems to reject the proposed help. It may help if the family member talks about their doubts, questions and certainties. If it is assumed that the person in question has been using drugs, their room or living quarters should be searched. This is especially the case for adolescents.

How is the link between adolescence and addiction explained?

Adolescence is fundamentally characterized by drug use that appears early in childhood (ages 10-12) and lasts into adulthood (up to 24-25 years). This period is marked by profound physical and psychological upheavals and is manifested by a sometimes-violent opposition to parents, school officials and peers, and so on.

It is useful to structure the child’s personality and is necessary for the transition to the adult stage. Experts say that adults should be present to help, listen, guide but also limit and manifest their love.
